#COVIDCOLUMBUS

WE'RE HERE TO HELP

I didn't put much thought into this idea before I just started shooting the series. Honestly, I didn't even know what I was going to do with the images. Really, I was just tired of all my rescheduled shoots and wanted to get back out and do something creative.
This concept felt needed and relevant.

I began texting my friends who know business owners in need. I just told them, I wanted to tell their story. I told them I wanted to pose them in the middle of their empty store. Almost all of them loved the idea.

Meeting all of these hugely influential people in my city was remarkable, but meeting them on these terms was saddening.
I hope the images catch a glimpse of the depravity this virus is causing on our beloved businesses.

“9 years of goals and growth were gone overnight. Our entire team laid off. We are struggling to survive. We were forced to pivot and innovate by going virtual in an industry based on the physical connection. We want to get back to what we love but are faced with the moral dilemma of keeping our team, families, and community safe while not losing what we’ve worked so hard to create..”

“Our business is centered around community happening in our space. It is literally what we are all about. So closing down our taproom and transitioning to carry out the only service has been a major adjustment. We are so grateful for the way that our community has supported us through this unprecedented challenge. Our team has stepped up in a big way to serve our customers in a safe and welcoming way, keeping the community at the center of what we do - just now at a safe distance. We look hopefully to a day that we can all gather together and toast to life and love together.”

“It’s been bittersweet. We are doing our best to create new ways to serve our community and have accessed new revenue streams. I got my start at the farmers market, and we enjoy and rely on that traffic every Saturday for six months of the year. Worthington Farmers Market has done a superb job of creating a convenient and safe drive through market, unfortunately due to location, it’s no longer an ingredient in the recipe of our week.”

“It’s like we have a million decisions to make with no clear answer so we base the decision on what we know today, which may very well change tomorrow. Like we want to take care of the people we have had to let go, but there isn’t enough time or money. Like we are failing at all of it but doing the best we can. If only that were enough.”

“This has forced us into a constant state of uncertainty and guesswork. I can’t see beyond next month, so to plan for the future is nearly impossible. We know this holding pattern can’t continue forever, but where and how do we go from here? We can all do our best, but there are no guarantees that our best will be enough.”

“Its changed everything. I've had to layoff 5 out of 7 employees. It seems like all we're doing right now is treading water. Growth is typically my mantra and right now we're regressing.”
